How is the salary cap hit for " following year" determined?
When you cut a player, the salary cap hit is as follows:
1) A pro-rated portion of his base salary is applied to the current year
2) Any bonus for the current year is applied to the current year
3) Any bonus for the next year and beyond is applied to the next year
So if you have a player with 3 years left on his contract, $500,000 base and $500,000 bonus for each of the 3 years, and you cut him at the halfway point, you will take a 750,000 cap hit for the current year (half of his base salary plus his bonus portion for the current year) and a 1,000,000 cap hit for next year (bonus portion of years 2 and 3)
