The whole point to IR is you can't put them back on your team.

no, it is to free up roster space while the dude is injured, and then you can take him off of IR when he is not injured. Aaron Rogers is on IR, we will be coming back in time for Christmas, David Johnson is on IR, he will be coming back week 17.
"IR-Return Designation Not everyone who ends up on IR has to see their season end for good. Players must remain on IR for eight weeks before being eligible to rejoin their teams in Week 9 via the IR-Return Designation. The NFL recently changed the IR-return designation so that teams are allowed to bring two players back from IR."
