1991 Training Camp

I inherited a team which was pretty good, but very much built around 4.5. I tried to prepare for the transition to 4.6, but it didn't go so well.

1.25 RB Peter Bradley Vol: 38 +11/-3 Now 55/79

I needed a legitimate runner in the worst way. I'll still wear this guy out, but he could have been much, much more.

2.13 MLB McKinley Berrios Vol: 24 +12/+2 Now 39/78

He will always need help in coverage, but will be a champion run stuffer.

3.19 WR Clarence Schmalz Vol: 70 +2/-8 Now 41/64

My attempt to bolster my thin receiving corps had predictably disastrous results.

3.23 WLB Mark Folsom Vol: 98 +17/+10 Now 47/80

He's too slow right now, but will still play because the incumbent is so bad. I'm hoping he'll be a bigger star in the future.

3.25 LG James Ellis Vol: 58 +2/-5 Now 42/71

I tried to draft a star runner and then draft a blocker for him. Both attempts failed miserably.

3.31 RT Steven Ormiston Vol: 60 +0/+0 Now 45/72

I don't know what to do with this guy. He broke even, but then made no progress at all. Will he be a long-term project forever?

3.32 LDE David Doolan Vol: 84 +5/-10 Now 36/57

I tried to take a flyer on this position conversion, but I failed hard.

4.22 FS Horace Cash Vol: 42 +2/-2 Now 40/58

At least he won't have to cover the dreaded FL Hitch for very long.

4.25 P Bruce Kenny Vol: 32 +6/-4 Now 51/92

In the new version, field position will be so, so important. My attempt to address the future was less than successful.

5.25 RG Ronald Mitchell Vol: 40 +7/+4 Now 43/70

Pass protectors will be at a premium in the new version.

6.25 RB Carl Tramel Vol: 46 +5/-3 Now 37/57

Drafting a guy as insurance for a high pick is almost always a bad bet. More often than not, the insurance guy fails as well.

7.25 C Daniel Fontenot Vol: 100 +0/-8 Now 33/54

If there were a prize for living down to low expectations, this guy would have won it.

7.31 LDE Robert Contreras Vol: 72 +7/-5 Now 33/55

Only Doolan keeps this guy from being garbage. At least I'm not paying him a bonus.

Camps like this make a lot more sense in the light of the new version. Here's hoping it gets much, much better.

My Training Camp was overshadowed by a bonehead error on my part. I had one pending contract the night before the training camp. It was for a veteran TE who would really just add depth and play ST.

However, because I had no open roster slots, when I signed the TE, the AI cut my 4th round pick of CB David Adams who went +6 at camp. He would have been a solid backup DB for years to come and critical as I transition this secondary from an aging core. But Congrats to Seattle who won his services!

This entire draft might as well be me drafting career backups, sadly.

3-21: William Cain (RB) +2/-5
I attempted to draft a true #2 RB, might have taken a risk with Cain. That risk failed, but maybe he is still salvageable.

3-26: Peter Davis (WLB) +2/-1
Tried to get more speed at the LB position but again, that went well as I had expected.

5-15: Joseph Mitchell (RT) +2/-8
Oof, tried to get some help at the offensive line position with a possible late steal. Could be a potential career backup if he survives preseason.

6-12: Christopher Smith (TE) +11/+6
Only 1 of 2 hits in the entire draft. Hopefully his speed can build up so he can be a serviceable TE. Pass and run blocking might also be an issue.

6-14: Kevin Low (RB) +8/+6
He's got a mountain to climb to make the final roster but looking at the future with the 4.6 update, he might be an essential pick after all.

6-28: William Lovett (RDE) +0/+0
This is probably the first time I've seen a high volatility player gain nothing in either category. I wonder if this is a glitch or something or if I should switch his position and play him somewhere else. But my goodness, he is lucky he survived training camp.

7-13: James White (QB) +3/-2
I'm pretty sure this was an AI pick because I was at work when this pick happened. I was even hoping to trade that pick away and that is exactly why I wanted to trade that pick away.

No undrafted free agent pickups so far which is surprising since I usually like to try them out and see what potential they could have.

It seems that for most teams their drafted players' futures was more frequently downgraded than upgraded.
