The Tennessean

Its a new era for the Titans. With the hiring of new General Manager, Dwayne Dougherty, the Titans are hoping to see a turn around in the organization. Dougherty, a life long Titan fan was more than surprised when he was hired than the new GM. He was last seen with other critical fans at the 1981 Draft booing the Titans' picks as they were drafted. Dougherty seems less critical now that he is the GM. "I don't hate the players. At the time, I feel it wasn't the right position to be picking. I feel there was better talent that could fill holes better. But the guys drafted by the previous GM are still talented and will be afforded their opportunity."

The Titans are coming off a 2 win season and Dougherty is confident that he can approve upon that. George Knox was hired as Head Coach before Dougherty's hiring, but Dougherty has confirmed that Knox will also be afforded his fair shot.

Dougherty, a new GM has a tall task ahead of him. However, he assures the fans he is up for the task. As Dougherty says, "We aren't going to win the Super Bowl the first year. But the goal is to bring quality football back to Nashville, TN. I mean, for goodness sake, the Nashville Pickers, the semi pro team here, have a stronger fan base than us. Its time we change that. The only way to change that is to win."

Titans fans are rejoicing as they have won 6 games in this season. This is the most since the 1977 season and third highest in franchise history. Dougherty was visibly upset during the end of season news conference/

"This isn't something to rejoice about. This team was designed to win 8 games and we didn't even do that. We have 20 veterans over the age of 30 on the roster. Our first three round picks were traded away in order to get us wins this season. It didn't work. Now we are stuck with unfavorable contracts with aging veterans. Now, the real challenge begins. We have to stay competitive and still build ourselves for the future. Without a pick in the first three rounds, we will have a limited budget to make a splash in free agency. Its time to get to work."

Death Blow: The Deal of Disaster https://paydirt.myfootballnow.com/trade/5485
With the draft just around the corner, we wanted to take a look back on the trade that occured in 1980 that has taken away what would have been the Titans' #3 overall pick this season. It was a deal that has had incredible results on both ends. For the Panthers, it provided key pieces to help them win a Super Bowl. For the Titans, it sent the franchise into a tailspin. Some may say that last season was the culmination of that tailspin with a crash and burn. But I fear we haven't seen the worst of this team yet.

Lets take a look at the deal:
Tennessee Received:
1981 1st Round Pick (#8 Overall) - This turned into TE John Mattison. A rare bright spot on the current Titans roster
1981 1st Round Pick (#16 Overall) -Terry Barrick. Had a breakout season last year, but has still had his rough patches and is unproven. Will enter the season as the starter
1981 3rd Round Pick (#29 Overall) - pick was later traded away in a later deal

Carolina Received:
C Jerry Teran - A former 1st Round pick who was only in his 7th season at the time
CB Jeremy Harris - Another former 1st Round pick with elite coverage ability
1982 1st Round Pick (ended up being #25 Overall), 1983 1st Round Pick (ended up being #3 Overall - both picks were later flipped by GM jouameng in his trademark move of acquiring picks to utilize as currency.

For those keeping score at home, this trade was essentially 4 first round picks from Tennessee (2 being established proven veterans) for 2 first round picks from Carolina. The deal has caused heartache in Tennessee. Fans are watching with fingers crossed that the tide may turn for this Tennessee Team. But through two years, the new GM hasn't done much to ease those fears and disappointment.

(Editor's note: How did this deal not get challenged and reviewed???????????)

Titans' Fans are scratching their had after a bizarre 1st day of the 1987 draft. Entering the day with only one pick, Coach David Stapleton patiently waited for his pick. Titans' fans were sure it was going to be a defensive player in this LB heavy draft. To everyone's surprise it was a TE. A position that doesn't need any immediate attention. Francis Moya, TE from Arizona State. A big time blocking TE that has some skill.

Then, after a few picks, to everyone's surprise, Stapleton traded back into the first round. His deal with Cleveland sent a future 1st and 2nd with this years third, for this years 30th and CLE's 2nd next year. Titans' fans were intrigued once again, until..... TE Andrew Spring. ANOTHER TE?! How could this happen. Spring from Florida is talented, but if the Titans didn't need a TE earlier, they definitely don't need one now.

When asked about his bizarre picks in the first round Stapleton responded, "Both young men exhibited attributes that intrigued us and if we can build upon them, they will be centerpieces for years to come. Francis from Arizona State is an excellent blocker. This team needs a Center of the future. We want a bear that can maul people over. Moya gives us that opportunity. Andrew Spring from Florida, while listed as a TE on their roster, played multiple positions around the field. He also played FB and was the HB in their power formations. He seems to have only gotten faster since his senior season ended so we think he could be our future at RB. But if not, we will still be able to utilize him at TE and FB."

The Tennessee roster is aging so it will be interesting to see how these youngsters impact the team during training camp
