Training Camp BattlesWith training camp looming around the corner, let's take a look at some of the biggest battles that will be happening for the Miami Dolphins as they go into their 4th season as a rebuilding organization. As always, let's start with the always controversial quarterback position.
Gabriel Young will be entering his 4th season in the league. The undrafted free agent from BYU has been the Dolphins starting QB through the worst of times and is still in the organization after a decent 3rd season that saw him throw for over 3000 yards, 27 TDs to only 17 INTs. His competition will most likely come in the form of 2nd year quarterback, Mark Rogers, the 3rd round pick from the 1989 draft. He started one game last season and was quickly benched in favor of Gabriel Young. Mark Rogers is hoping for an excellent training camp and preseason to win the starting job and prove to be the biggest steal from the 1989 draft. As of right now however, the early favorite to be starting the regular season opener is Gabriel Young.
Miami oddly invested a lot of draft picks on offensive line, but oddly enough, they invested for a lot of centers. 1st round pick Robert McCann fell to the Dolphins at number 31. Michael Oropeza was selected in the 6th round and the Dolphins signed Brian Woodhouse as an undrafted free agent. The other 2 centers are both 2nd year players, Marcus Yarbrough and Anthony Jackson who didn't see too much playing time outside of the preseason. Whatever Miami is doing with their offensive line is odd, but Miami has pulled off stranger things before. As of right now, Robert McCann is seen as the projected starter, but how many backup centers will Miami be keeping?
Lastly, Miami's cornerbacks should hopefully be fun to watch this season. Miami drafted WLB Christopher Carnahan with the 17th pick of this year's draft and converted him to cornerback to help fix one of Miami's biggest flaws from last season, the secondary. Albeit, Miami's 2 starting corners from last season were both rookies and speaking of them, John Morrison will be hoping for a breakout season in year two after a very disappointing rookie season that saw him get out performed the 27th pick of last season's draft, Louis Oconnell. Both will be looking for a dominant season and with Carnahan on the roster, that should be a biggest boost toward that secondary. My projected starting corners will be Louis Oconnell as CB1 and John Morrison as CB2, but watch out for Chrisopher Carnahan become the starting corner if he has an excellent training camp and preseason.
