When you get wily GMs, as in this league, I'd expect trading to be minimal. Trading for future draft choices is a gamble because generally you can't be sure of the quality/availability of players in a future draft. And trading someone on your roster whose qualities caused you to draft/trade for him in the first place, generally means you likely weaken your team as much as you strengthen it with the acquired player. That doesn't mean there will be no trades, I just expect there will be fewer of them. Much like RL where there are relatively few trades in the pro ranks as compared to most MFN leagues. In any event, relatively few trades maximizes the importance of the draft and free agent signings - again, much like RL.
Then you get trades like the last one where:
RB 3rd year 90 speed
CB 4th year 90 speed
traded for
2nd rounder
6th rounder
6th rounder
7th rounder
So essentially a 2nd rounder landed two relatively young players with 90 speed.
Apparently the importance of speed at practicely every position wasn't understood.
Player weights were either set to default or speed wasn't weighed high enough in custom weights
Or trade score values were followed because both the default player weights and trade scores give little credence to speed.
The rule of thumb for ANY trade is:
Can I get back through the draft more then I'm giving away?
The answer with this trade is clearly No!
Maybe.....just maybe you land a 90 speed player with the 2nd rounder but he won't be fleshed out with other key attributes but neither both 6th or the 7th will garner a 90 speed player other then maybe a punter if you are lucky.
I have no problem with teams trading for draft picks and if both those players were in year 7 or 8 then I wouldn't say a thing but a 3rd year player with 90 speed will maintain that 90 speed for 5-6 seasons while the 4th year player will maintain that speed for 4-5 seasons.
That's 9-11 seasons of playing time from the 2 players for 3 throw away picks (6th and 7th rounder) and 1 2nd rounder you have to play 3 full seasons before you can draft it.
How does this improve his team??
If you are new or simply unsure about a trade....ask someone for their opinion like maybe Meatman or maybe someone else in this league or another league.
