The Cleveland Browns fell to the Arizona Cardinals 31-24 in Super Bowl XLIV on January 25, 2015, at Arizona's home field. The game featured multiple lead changes and pivotal plays, but Arizona ultimately prevailed.
The Cardinals took an early lead after Sylvester Fisher's 8-yard touchdown run just over three minutes into the game. The extra point by Terry McFalls was good, giving Arizona a 7-0 advantage. Cleveland responded with a 49-yard field goal by Conrad Stahl at 7:32 of the first quarter to narrow the gap to 7-3.
The Browns then scored a touchdown with under 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Don Moore's 5-yard run put Cleveland ahead 10-7 after Stahl’s successful extra point. The second quarter saw a back-and-forth battle with Arizona kicking a 28-yard field goal to tie the game at 10-10 after a penalty nullified a touchdown. Cleveland retook the lead with a late 2-yard touchdown pass from Zack Warner to Don Moore, making it 17-10.
Arizona’s kicker, Terry McFalls, was key in the Cardinals’ scoring effort, hitting three field goals from 53, 47, and 28 yards. McFalls’s consistency kept Arizona within striking distance throughout the game.
Warner led a robust passing attack for Cleveland, completing 34 of 57 attempts for 363 yards and two touchdowns, though he threw three interceptions. Glen Lillibridge contributed significantly with 114 receiving yards and a rushing touchdown despite limited ground yardage.
On the ground, Cleveland's Don Moore had 17 rushing yards with a touchdown, complementing his receiving contribution. Arizona balanced their offense with Sylvester Fisher rushing for 34 yards and a touchdown while adding a receiving touchdown as well.
Defensively, the Browns recorded one sack, three interceptions, and forced one fumble but could not capitalize enough on turnovers to secure a win. Special teams saw Douglas Jaffe punt well for Cleveland, while Arizona’s David Phillips consistently flipped field position.
Arizona's second-half surge, including field goals and effective special teams play, shifted momentum. Cleveland’s defense forced some turnovers but was unable to convert those into sufficient points. Warner's interceptions, coupled with the Cardinals' reliable kicking, played a decisive role.
Coach William Kenney's Browns displayed resilience and offensive strength but ultimately were unable to overcome the Cardinals' balanced attack and timely scoring. The Cardinals’ victory marks a significant achievement in Super Bowl XLIV.
The game ended without overtime, concluding an intense championship clash where both teams showed their capabilities, but Arizona managed to secure the final sweep. The Browns will look to build on this performance in coming seasons.
