CINCINNATI — The Arizona Cardinals opened their 2016 preseason campaign with a 17-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium on Saturday. Both teams showed flashes but the Bengals managed to hold off the Cardinals despite Phoenix’s early lead.

The Cardinals, coached by Steven Edwards, won the opening toss and elected to receive. Arizona struck first on a 3-yard touchdown run by Sylvester Fisher early in the first quarter. The Cardinals took a 7-0 lead after Terry McFalls converted the extra point.

Cincinnati responded with a 46-yard field goal by Luis Kaplan, trimming the deficit to 7-3 in the opening quarter. The Cardinals' offense then suffered a costly interception when quarterback Frank Atkins threw one picked off by Calvin Alexis, who returned it 14 yards to Arizona’s 17-yard line.

The Bengals capitalized on the turnover, eventually scoring on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Richard Ackerman to Scott Desalvo with just under three minutes remaining in the second quarter. Following the successful extra point, Cincinnati went up 10-7, a lead they would maintain for the remainder of the game.

The second half was largely a defensive battle with neither team able to score. Both offenses struggled to gain momentum behind strong special teams play and defensive stands. Notably, Brad Tessier pinned Cincinnati deep multiple times with punts exceeding 40 yards.

Statistically, Bengals quarterback Richard Ackerman completed 23 of 34 passes for 214 yards and one touchdown but threw one interception. Running back Roy Dunlap contributed 64 rushing yards on 29 carries. Tight end Spencer Stork was the leading receiver for Cincinnati with 71 yards.

For the Cardinals, the ground game was the highlight, led by Micah Reeder who rushed for 82 yards and added 37 receiving yards. The Cardinals’ offense totaled 163 passing yards with no passing touchdowns and one interception. Sylvester Fisher added 9 rushing yards and caught a touchdown pass.

Defensively, the Cardinals recorded one sack, forced two fumbles with one recovery, and intercepted one pass. Donald Martinez stood out with a forced fumble, while the Bengals notched three sacks and one interception.

The Cardinals committed five penalties for 38 yards, compared to Cincinnati’s three penalties for 31 yards. Both teams struggled on third down conversions, with neither registering a conversion attempt.

Phoenix Journal contacted IoanBlood, owner of the Cardinals, who offered a brief statement on the loss: “Tough start for us. We saw Sylvester Fisher make a good impact early, but those interceptions really hurt momentum. We’ll need to clean up mistakes as we move forward.”

Arizona will look to regroup ahead of their next preseason game as Edwards continues to evaluate his roster in the early stages of the season.
