CHARLOTTE, NC — The Carolina Panthers improved to 2-0 on the season with a commanding 34-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home on Sunday. Under Head Coach Dwayne Cabrera, Carolina's offense was fueled by a powerful rushing attack, while its defense held Tampa Bay to zero points for the game.
The Panthers struck first after giving up an early touchdown on a 66-yard kickoff return by Tampa Bay's Sterling Murray. Carolina quickly responded with a touchdown run by Kenneth Pitts, who ran 8 yards into the end zone late in the opening quarter. Pitts finished with 54 rushing yards and added 5 receiving yards.
Carolina extended its lead in the second quarter with a touchdown pass from quarterback John Snapp to Joseph Greene, who made a 22-yard catch for a score. Snapp completed 10 of 19 passes for 94 yards and one touchdown but threw two interceptions.
Sterling Murray was the standout player for Carolina offensively, rushing for 160 yards and contributing 23 receiving yards. Fullback Roland Wallace also scored a receiving touchdown and gained 41 rushing yards.
Special teams contributed as well with kicker Frank Aoki converting on both his field goal attempts, including a 31-yard field goal in the third quarter.
Defensively, the Panthers were effective in shutting down the Buccaneers with three sacks and two interceptions. Benjamin Tomlinson intercepted passes twice for Carolina, returning one for 22 yards.
Tampa Bay struggled offensively behind quarterback Levi Madrid, who completed 9 of 22 passes for 55 yards without any touchdowns and threw three interceptions. The Buccaneers managed only 59 rushing yards on 22 carries, failing to score at any point in the game.
Carolina controlled time of possession and capitalized on Tampa Bay's mistakes. The Panthers did not have any third-down conversion attempts or red zone visits, yet they built an early lead that Tampa Bay could not match.
The win keeps Carolina atop their division with a 1-0 record in division play while Tampa Bay falls to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the division. The Panthers allowed only 13 points against two opponents so far this season while scoring 66.
Coach Dwayne Cabrera's squad will look to maintain their undefeated streak in coming games, building on a balanced attack and a stifling defense that completely shut down the Buccaneers on this opening week match.
The Buccaneers will aim to regroup following the loss and turnover-heavy performance as they seek their first win in Week 3.
Panthers Shut Out Buccaneers 34-0 to Start Season 2-0
Carolina's dominant ground game and defense secure a convincing win over Tampa Bay in Week 2.
