CHARLOTTE, NC — The Carolina Panthers opened their 2015 regular season with a commanding 35-3 victory over the visiting Saints on Sunday. Carolina's balanced attack and stout defense set the tone early in the game and never allowed the Saints a foothold.
The Panthers took the lead in the first quarter on a 6-yard run by Sterling Murray, following an initial John Snapp 13-yard completion to Ian Burrowes that came with a holding penalty on the Panthers. Frank Aoki's extra point gave Carolina a 7-0 lead. Murray's strong ground game propelled the Panthers throughout the day, finishing with 206 rushing yards and 7 receiving yards including one receiving touchdown.
Carolina quarterback John Snapp completed 22 of 25 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns, feeding a variety of receivers. In the second quarter, a key 11-yard pass to Larry Medina set up a touchdown, followed by a successful extra point improving the margin to 14-0. Larry Medina was one of Carolina's standout players, balancing 154 rushing yards and 48 receiving yards, and scoring three total touchdowns—two receiving and one rushing.
The Panthers stretched their lead further just before halftime with a 4-yard touchdown reception by Major Horn. The extra point was good, making it 21-0. Carolina maintained control throughout the second half as well. Medina’s 25-yard run for a touchdown in the third quarter and a later 26-yard touchdown run contributed to a commanding 35-0 lead. Each touchdown was followed by successful extra points from kicker Frank Aoki,
Carolina’s rushing attack totaled 396 yards on 44 carries, dominating the line of scrimmage. The offense did not attempt any field goals but relied on touchdowns to build their lead. Despite an efficient passing game, the Panthers did not convert any third downs in the game.
The Saints struggled offensively, totaling just 48 passing yards on 8 completions out of 15 attempts with no touchdowns, and 76 rushing yards on 31 carries. Their only points came from a field goal by David Iverson. Defensively, Saints players Leonard Beebe and Leroy Smith each forced a fumble, with the team recovering two total turnovers, but this was not enough to slow the Panthers’ momentum.
Saints head coach Gregory Watts’ squad failed to find rhythm, accumulating only one penalty for 8 yards compared to Carolina’s four penalties for 40 yards, with some key punts and fair catches noted but without translating to scoring drives.
With this victory, the Panthers improve to 1-0 overall and in the division, claiming the top spot in the division standings. The Saints start their season 0-1 and sit at the bottom of the division rankings.
Coach Dwayne Cabrera’s Panthers showed balanced offense and solid defense, effectively controlling the tempo of the game from start to finish. The comes as a strong statement in week one, laying groundwork for their 2015 campaign.
