Speed is the Key?

I've been playing long enough now to conclude, especially when it comes to RB's and sometimes WR's, that speed and to an extent acceleration are the most important attributes in those two positions. Would I be wrong in this reasoning?

Example: I had a 52/52 running back with decent speed as the only positive thing going for him, run over 1000 yards in a season while averaging around 6 yards a carry. On the other hand, I've had running backs and fullbacks in other leagues who have great attributes that bump up their ratings to the high 70's and 80's, but their speed is awful. As a result they tend to average 2-3 yards a carry and seem to get stopped short quite often.

Obviously, the offensive line, defense, and other aspects would influence this, but this seems to be the norm for all my teams.

Just wanted to hear everyone else's thoughts.

I've notice Ball Carrying is pretty important too. Low ball carrying leads to slower runs with the ball. Also, we had another thread bringing up fatigue's importance, with a 100 rated HB getting chased down from behind by a scrub FS.

Speed is without a doubt extremely important though.

Speed is definitely the key; I have the same observations as you. Obviously the ideal RB is a 70+ overall with 100 speed but if those are unavailable I've done very well with 50ish RBs with 100 speed and not much else.

Agreed. I kept wondering why some low rated running backs outperformed "higher" rated running backs, and speed always seemed to be the consistent difference.

It seems like elite speed and a high rating in another key attribute is a winning combination for running backs. I once got 900 yards in 8 starts (4.8 ypc) from a 40-something rated RB: http://mfn19.preview.myfootballnow.com/player/839

He has 100 max speed and 91 strength, but not much else going for me: Bad acceleration and ball carrying, no ability to break tackles, etc.

I've also seen some teams with WR and RB with 60-70 speed and poor skills and destoy everyone. I just don't know how but it made me things that the system and plays familiarity has a lot in the balance as well.

maybe I'm wrong.. but we see players with poor skills and even if you change the weights they won't be good at all and they have outstanding seasons.

For RBs, I see the three most important skills as SP, AC, and Carry in that order.

But for WRs, I see SP as a useful to important secondary skill. I see Route and AC as more important than SP. Route is what actually gets a WR open and AC allows the WR to burst off the line and out of a break. SP is only useful if you're going to run a deep attack, and I don't recommend that at all with the way the pressure code works.

EDIT: I guess I currently have my weights for WR as 1-Route and 2-Speed. I don't remember when I switched that.

I think this plays a big part also.

There's more than one way to skin a cat. Speed is just the easiest.

I think it's all about the matchup. If your guy has superior speed, he'll (typically) win. If not, you have to find another way to get an advantage. But there are lots of ways to do it.
