The Paydirt Report: Week 3

Week 3 highlights: some top teams rebound from last weeks hardships, only 3 winless teams left, only 5 undefeated teams left and is the Green Bay / Chicago rivalry back?

Game of the Week: A wild 2nd half @ Soldier Field leaves the Packers undefeated and shows Chicago could be back from the dead. After a dull 1st half the teams headed to the locker room at the half with Green bay leading 3-0.

The Packers came out of the locker room fired up and Green Bay's QB Sullivan would connect with WR Foster on a 26 yd TD to make it 10-0. Green Bay would add two more FG's to run the score to 16-0. Chicago would finally score a 5 yd TD pass from QB Galloway to WR Fryer capping off a 12 play 75 yd drive to cut into the lead 16-7. The Bears next drive resulted in another 12 play TD drive on another QB Galloway to WR Fryer connection with 3:53 left on the clock. But Bear's K Miller would miss the extra point leaving the score at 16-13. Chicago would get the ball right back on a fumble by Green Bay's WR Mumma at mid field. The Bears would turn that into points on a 54 yd FG by K Miller who was making up for his missed xp to tie the score @ 16-16 with :42 left in the game.

QB Sullivan would take the ball at their own 25. With 3 timeout in his pocket, he would go to work. The Packers drove down the field aided by a controversial unnecessary roughness call to set up a 49 yd FG attempt by K Beard in which he would drill for the win. Bears head coach Robert Lujan berated the refs at the post game press conference which will most likely result in a hefty fine coming down from the league office.

What happened in Week 3 by division
AFC West
Oakland(3-0) continues to prove critics wrong by staying undefeated. San Diego(2-1) bounces back to stay within a game of the Raiders. Denver(2-1) wins big for their 2nd straight. Kansas City(1-2) drops their 2nd straight and trails the division.

AFC East
The defending Super Bowl champs Miami Dolphins(2-1) had their 8 game win streak dating back to week 14 of last season snapped. Buffalo(2-1) also lose as the two stay tied for 1st. Both New England(1-2) and New York Jets(1-2) are off to slow starts but only trail by 1 game in this young season.

AFC North
Cleveland(3-0) continues to be spotless. With Pittsburgh(1-2), Cincinnati(1-2) and Baltimore(1-2) all trailing by 2 games.

AFC South
Gotta love the battle in the South. Surprising Indianapolis(2-1) and Houston(2-1) along with Jacksonville(2-1) all tied on top of this crazy division. While the defending division crown winner Tennessee(0-3) is still looking for their first win of 1978.

NFC West
You knew Seattle(3-0) would be tough and battling at the top of the NFC West. But nobody expected both Arizona(1-2) and Los Angeles(1-2) to struggle out of the gate. San Francisco(0-3) losing tradition continues.

NFC East
Washington(2-1) and New York Giants(2-1) both go down with loses in week 3. The Eagles(1-2) get into the win column with a thrilling victory over division foe and defending NFC East champ Dallas(0-3).

NFC North
With Green Bay's(3-0) big win over the Bears(1-2) they opened up a lead over both Chicago and Detroit(1-2) who lost their 2nd straight along with Minnesota(1-2).

NFC South
Tampa Bay(3-0) is trying to run and hide from the rest of the NFC South competition. But everyone else in the South wins as well to try and keep the Bucs in sight. Carolina(1-2), Atlanta(1-2) and New Orleans(1-2) all keep pace.

Games to watch Week 4:
Detroit @ Green Bay
Arizona @ Jacksonville
Indianapolis @ Houston
San Diego @ Denver

**** of a game Ghost,

We won another FG kicking competition 4-3,the key one being a 52 yarder as the clock ran out to sent us to O/T.

Is this some kinda record 21 punts in a game ?

Nice division win Carolina. I thought the Saints magic would continue after a 10-0 lead but we came back down to reality. I enjoyed those 5 PI calls in a span of 8 pass plays. That was a new experience.
