The Paydirt Report: Week 1The 1980 season opened up with some nail biters, a huge upset and divisional battles. The biggest story in week 1 was the Minnesota Vikings upsetting the Green Bay Packsers 24-20 on a 14 point comeback that was capped off with a 59 yds pass connection from QB - Rhynes to TE Lewis. The battle between powerhouses Miami and Oakland didn't disappoint as Miami held of a late Oakland drive for a 20-13 win. And what a game in Tennessee as the Titans and Steelers traded punches with Pittsburgh kicking two 4th QT FG's including a 55 yarder for the 18-17 victory.
On the player front undrafted Free Agent RB Coombs runs wild for Carolina with 197 rush yds. Arizona picked him up in FA and then traded him to Carolina in which he has to be the best underdog story in Paydirt.
Now lets look at the rest of the league.
AFCWest
The Wild Wild West starts out Wild as usual. But in week 1 they had one win, two losses and a tie. Kansas City(1-0) jumps out front with a big divisional win over division rival Denver(0-1). San Diego(0-0-1) fought to a tie with Houston. And Oakland(0-1) fell short in Miami.
East
With Miami's(1-0) big opening weekend win over Oakland, they garb a share of the lead with Buffalo(1-0) with rookie GM $B$Dog$ throttled division foe New England(0-1) . The NY Jets(0-1) opened with a loss against defending Super Bowl Champs Seattle.
North
The AFC North came out strong in week 1 as 3 of the 4 teams win and the only loss was a divisional one. Division favorite Cleveland(1-0) wins a close one, Pittsburgh(1-0) wins a nail biter and Baltimore(1-0) wins their divisional battle with Cincinnati(0-1) in a close one.
South
Ah the crazy ole AFC South. What is there to say about this nutty division. You never know what to expect and this year is starting out as no exception. Houston(0-0-1) comes out of week 1 as the leader of the South without a win. Indianapolis(0-1) and Tennessee(0-1) lose in close games while Jacksonville(0-1) gets laminated by powerhouse Tampa Bay.
NFCEast
Dallas(1-0) jumps out into an early lead but Philadelphia(0-1) is looking like they could be a team on the rise. They played Carolina (who is another powerhouse) very tough. They remind me of Minnesota as both teams seemed to be on the edge of competing for divisional titles but for one reason or another they fall short. We'll see how this season plays out. Washington(0-1) opened with an embarrassing loss to the lowly Rams, while NY Giants(0-1) lose to the 49ers.
West
There's a 3 way tie in the West that is not expected to last very. Seattle(1-0) expected. San Francisco(1-0) unexpected. Los Angeles(1-0) unexpected. Arizona(0-1) expected. The defending Champs are still expected to runaway with this division as the season wears on.
North
The Minnesota(1-0) comes out of the gate swinging with their huge victory over Green Bay(0-1). But it seems the Packers stumbling out of the gate is nothing new. They always seem to recover and capture that North banner. Detroit(1-0) rewards their new GM CrazyRazor with a season opener win over Chicago(0-1).
South
The usual suspects prevailed in week one here. Tampa Bay(1-0), Carolina(1-0) and New Orleans(1-0) open with wins. Atlanta(0-1) disappointed their new GM JDR961002 with a divisional loss to the Saints. There should be another tough battle in the NFC South in 1980 and it's started out just as such.
