1st Quarter NFC review
There are the mainstays Seattle, Green Bay, and Tampa. There are some surprises Washington and the Giants, some crash and burns Lions and Cowboys. The story of the NFC thus far.
WestThe Giants and Redskins have both jumped out of the gates and are sealed at the top of the division, both in playoff positions at the quarter mark. The Giants who under Beercloud’s leadership started showing improvement at end of the 77 season. All the Giants games have been close affairs, but there should be concerns. The biggest is, they don’t show the numbers on either side of the ball to continue the current pace. Washington has a top ten offense and lead the NFC in points scored, but also give up points. Although both are current playoff contenders, they are fragile. Philadelphia has a decent offense, but their defense leaves much to be desired. There is room for improvement on both sides of the ball. Dallas being 0-4 could be the biggest surprise in Paydirt. Last season’s division champ is crashing hard and time will tell if they can fix their issues.
EastSeattle has started out 4-0 and are in a commanding position unless there is a total collapse. The rank in the top ten in defense and offense. The opponents they have played have a combined record of 3-13, but until Seattle is beat in the NFC, they are still the champions. The Cardinals and the Rams, both having significant offensive issues have struggled and are probably at best wild card teams right now. The Rams have a good defense, but the first week loss to the Cards could pose an issue down the line. The Cards are having issues on both sides of the ball. The 49ers right now will have the 1st pick in the 1979 draft, they are headed in the direction of posting their 3rd losing season in row and apparently have no direction or leadership.
NorthThe Packers are the team that could unseat the Seahawks as the NFC champ with their 4-0 start. They have a stable franchise while ranking in the top ten in offense and defense. In many divisions a 2-game lead is not much, but if a team must beat the Packers it is huge. The upcoming Vikings is the only team that is making a statement in the North. They have a decent offense and defense but will need to improve both to continue their rise. The only team that has crashed harder than the Cowboys are the Lions, after winning the division last season they are 1-3. The resemble the same issues that the Rams have a good defense (ranked in the top 10) and offensive struggles, there is still time. The Bears have talent but are still struggling to find their identity.
SouthTampa…Tampa…. Tampa, they have a top ten rated offense and defense in Paydirt ranking #2 in both. They have won the division two years running and show no signs of slowing down. They have become the mainstay at the top of the South and there is no reason they shouldn’t remain there. Atlanta and Carolina could both have a say as both boast very good defenses with Atlanta #1 in the Paydirt. Their offense is suspect though and needs to improve. Carolina is currently the probable #2 at least by the numbers, but both teams are tough. New Orleans is alive, but they have issues on both sides of the ball that need improvement.
