The Paydirt Report: Week 8We've reached the halfway mark of 1981. Miami and Cincinnati look like the teams to beat in the AFC thus far. The NFC looks like a Seattle freight train that everyone else is trying to hold onto. That being said, Dallas, Detroit and Atlanta are teams that could knock em off. Seattle doesn't have any easy second half of the season as they play Cleveland, Carolina, Atlanta and Green Bay. All 4 of those teams will challenge the Seahawks domination.
The AFC is a little more muddled. Miami continues to roll and Cincinnati's uprising has caught Cleveland a little off guard. The rest of the conference is pretty well balanced. The West and South are up for grabs by all 8 teams at the midway point. Now lets see Paydirt's divisional races.
AFC West
The Mild Mild West has been a back and forth battle. But who will rise to the top in the second half and take the crown? San Diego(5-3) has taken the first step in that direction by defeating Kansas City(4-4) in a crucial divisional game. Denver(3-5) and Oakland(3-5) both lose and drop to 2 games back. But all 4 teams are well in contention and could take the division.
East
Miami(7-1) wins their 5th in a row and gets a lil help from Dallas who defeated Buffalo(5-3) in Paydirt's Game of the Week. NY Jets(3-5) three game win streak was snapped by the Dolphins. New England(1-7) can now start planning for the off-season barring a miracle.
North
Cincinnati(6-2) continues to knock down the wins to stay just ahead of Cleveland(5-3) who keeps the pressure on with 2nd win in a row. Baltimore(2-6) who won this week and Pittsburgh(2-6) who lost this week are held up in the cellar.
South
Houston(5-3) goes down for the 2nd week in a row and this time both Jacksonville(4-4) and Indianapolis(4-4) take full advantage and close up within a game of the AFC South lead. Tennessee(3-5) loses an exciting game against the Jaguars that prevent them from taking advantage of their own.
NFCEast
Dallas(7-1) knocked down their 2nd tough opponent in a row with their win over Buffalo. NY Giants(4-4) takes a tough loss and Philadelphia(4-4) wins 3rd in a row to jump into the Wild Card talk for the time being. They will play Dallas twice in the next two weeks. If they sweep they have a chance at stealing the division away from the Cowboys. Washington(0-8) is still searching for that elusive first win.
West
Seattle(8-0) is on a mission to try and capture their 4th blackflys trophy. They finished the first half of the season unscathed. San Francisco(2-6), Arizona(2-6) and Los Angeles(1-7) are having rough seasons and are already getting their wars rooms ready.
North
Detroit(7-1) defeated the NY Giants to bounce back into the win column as Green Bay(6-2) stays hot on their tail with their 3rd straight win. Chicago(3-5) has fallen off and Minnesota(1-7) couldn't duplicate their upset win from last week.
South
The surprising Atlanta Falcons(7-1) continues to roll and finish off the first half of the 1981 season on top of the Super South. They hold a 1 game lead over Carolina(6-2) who won again this week. The Panthers and the Falcons will meet in two weeks which will be a huge game for the South. Tampa Bay(5-3) is keeps hanging around and New Orleans(3-5) has found their groove by winning their 3rd in a row.
