The Paydirt Report: Week 2What teams are the real contenders and what teams are the pretenders?
If Detroit is the new Carolina with trades, is the NFC South the new Wild Wild West of the AFC?
Through the first two weeks there seems to be a changing of the guard in many respects. But it is early and teams might not be what they seem. Or are they? From some stunning upsets in week 1 to the blowouts of week 2. We can only see the first strokes of the brush on the canvass of a painting we call Paydirt 1979.
AFC West
Denver(2-0) has won it's second straight to open the season with a convincing win over the struggling Raiders(0-2). Is there a Beercloud Annual Prediction curse? The defending AFC West champs think so. Being outscored 48-10 in their first two games. San Diego(1-1) bounces back with a win over Kansas City(1-1) to tie the Chiefs up for second in the West.
AFC East
Jets-Jets-Jets......Or should we say Defense-Defense-Defense? Either way the NY Jets(2-0) sit on top of the AFC all alone. Aided by a big win over Buffalo(1-1). Miami(1-1) rebounds by creaming Pittsburgh. New England(1-1) loses to drop into the log jam we call second place.
AFC North
Both Cleveland(1-1) and Cincinnati(1-1) lose but remain tied for the division lead as both Pittsburgh(0-2) and Baltimore(0-2) lose. Baltimore has lost two tough games, both by 4th quarter comebacks. I suspect the Ravens will be running extra wind sprints this week.
AFC South
Houston(2-0) beat defending Super Bowl Champs Cleveland to make a statement that last year was no fluke. The Texans are for real. Tennessee(1-1) and Jacksonville(1-1) even up their records with wins and Indianapolis(0-2) has also lost two very tough loses. Also losing them in the 4th quarter. Maybe the Ravens and the Colts can hold joint stamina practices?
NFC East
Dallas(1-1) grabs a share of the East lead with a win over the NY Giants(0-2) as Philadelphia(1-1) loses a tough one in overtime. Washington(0-2) takes up the early tail. Somebody has to do it.
NFC West
The 49ers(2-0) sitting on top of the hill in the West all by themselves? Better run to Vegas quick before their odds of winning Super Bowl X go up. Ok prolly better not waste your money. You can go to Vegas, just dont make that silly bet. Seattle(1-1) after looking strong in their opener, fall in a big way by getting rolled by Tampa Bay. Los Angeles(1-1) joins the party with a victory and Arizona(1-1) after a loss to the Saints.
NFC North
Detroit(2-0) wins big again. They've outscored their opponents 49-3. With rolls reversed, Green Bay(1-1) is now the one chancing the division lead early this season. The win in big fashion. Both Minnesota(0-2) and Chicago(0-2) struggle out of the gate.
NFC South
There's some action going on down South. Tampa Bay(2-0), New Orleans(2-0) and Carolina(2-0) get off to a fast start. Talk about blowouts, Tampa Bay has outscored their opponents 77-13 and New Orleans has by a whopping 89-6. Carolina says you guys go ahead and win with flash, we'll just take the W's.....thank you. Atlanta(1-1) loses to the Rams to trail in this very tough division.
Games to Watch Week 3Carolina @ Tampa Bay -
Battle RoyaleCleveland @ Cincinnati -
Battle RoyaleDenver @ Kansas City
Detroit @ NY Jets
New England @ Miami
Correction: Arizona is 1-1 not 0-2. Correction made.
